Relational Life Therapy (RLT)
"Other therapies teach you skills. We deal with the part of you who won't use them."
This insight comes from Terry Real, founder of Relational Life Therapy (RLT)—one of the most effective modern approaches to couples therapy. It’s why I’m undertaking an intensive 200-hour training to become an RLT Certified Couples Therapist, a qualification currently held by fewer than 20 therapists in the UK.
Why RLT works.
When life is calm, most of us know how to be decent partners. We’re kind, reasonable, reflective. We communicate well. On a good day.
But when stress hits—work pressure, kids, money, exhaustion—it doesn’t take much to tip you over. A small trigger, like dirty dishes, suddenly feels like disrespect or rejection. You snap. Or you shut down. Not because you don’t know better—but because you’re overwhelmed.
Your worst moments aren’t about missing skills. They’re about lack of regulation. When your nervous system is hijacked, insight and techniques disappear. Until you understand what sets you off, how it happens, and what keeps you stuck, “good communication” tools won’t help in the heat of the moment.
Using the RLT approach, I work with you to identify the patterns and protective strategies that derail your relationship. We go beneath the surface, tackle what’s really getting in the way, and build something stronger—together.
This is not passive therapy. I’m active, direct, and fully engaged—reflecting what I see and challenging what isn’t working. It won’t always be comfortable—but it will be honest, supportive, and focused on real, lasting change.
